Digital thermometer (SCH410)
The digital thermometer measures your child’s body temperature
rectally (in the rectum), axially (in the armpit) or orally (in the mouth).
Note: Test in bath water for 10 seconds.
Note: Results may vary based on the individual and the method used.
Note: To ensure the best accuracy, we advise you to measure the
temperature rectally.
Note: Oral and axial measurements are usually 0.5 to 1°C lower
than actual body temperature.
Childrens’ temperature
The temperature of a child is normally between 36.5 and 37.5°C.
Keep in mind that a child’s temperature varies depending on age,
activity, time of day, etc. Remember that some illnesses do not
have high temperature as a symptom. Temperature measurement
should not be a substitute for consulting your physician.
When reporting your child’s temperature to a professional, state
the measurement method.
Rectal measurement
For rectal measurement of a baby’s temperature, proceed as follows:
1 Remove the protection cap from the digital thermometer.
Make sure that the metal probe of the exible tip is still rmly
attached to the digital thermometer.
2 Lubricate the tip of the digital thermometer with a
water-soluble jelly.
Note: Do not use petroleum jelly (e.g. vaseline).
3 Press I to switch on the digital thermometer.
4 Lay the baby on its stomach or its side.
5 With one hand, separate the baby’s buttocks.
With the other hand, gently slide the tip of the digital
thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2 inch) into the
rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
Hold the baby rmly so that it cannot turn while the digital
thermometer is inserted.
Never push the exible tip too far into the rectum.
6 Keep the digital thermometer in place until the
measurement is nished (when the °C indication stops
ashing and the thermometer beeps).
See section ‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the
meaning of the beeps.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the
display shows ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside
the temperature range. Switch off the digital thermometer, check if it
is correctly positioned and switch it on again.
7 Remove the digital thermometer and read the display.
8 Press I to switch off the digital thermometer.
Note: Switch off the digital thermometer after use. The digital
thermometer switches off automatically after 1 min. if the
temperature measured is lower than 32°C, or after 10 min.
if the temperature measured is higher than 32°C.
